Laparoscopy for infertility is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a laparoscope (a fibre-optic tube with light and video camera) inserted through two or more minor incisions, often in the belly button. The surgeon can then visually examine the pelvic reproductive organs and the pelvic cavity. The treatment is done under anesthesia so the patient does not feel any pain.

Common reasons for undergoing a laparoscopy include the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, and causes of infertility. The removal of fibroids, uterus, ovarian cysts, lymph nodes, or an ectopic pregnancy can also be done through laparoscopy.
